Candy Grams for Shannen’s Dream

Smarties for Shannen Girls Club and Student Parliament are joining together for this year’s Candy-Gram Valentine’s Sale. We have decided to fundraise money for Shannen’s Dream. Shannen’s Dream is a foundation that was started by Shannen Koostachin, a Grade 8 youth education advocate from the Attawapiskat First Nation in Ontario. She had a dream: safe and comfy schools and culturally based education for First Nations children and youth. Many First Nations schools receive less funding per student than provincial and territorial schools, and zero dollars for things like libraries, computers, languages or extracurricular activities. Many also do not provide a safe and appropriate learning environment, and may pose serious health concerns, including mold contamination, high carbon dioxide levels, rodent infestations, sewage, and inadequate or lack of heating. Shannen worked tirelessly to try to convince the federal government to give First Nations children a proper education. Unfortunately, she passed away in a car accident at the age of 15 before her dream could come true. But it did. On June 22, 2012—the day Shannen would have graduated—construction started for a new school in Attawapiskat. The new school opened in August 2014 (CBC). https://fncaringsociety.com/shannens-dream We are selling Smarties to be delivered on February 14th. Each Candy-Gram will consist of 2 boxes of smarties in a festive wrapper and bow along with a message from the sender. Each Candy-Gram costs $2.00 or 3 Candy-Grams for $5.00. They will be sold on Monday, February 6th to Wednesday, February 8th during recess and lunch. At the time of purchase, students may also fill out a “Have a Heart Day” message which will be delivered to Prime Minister Trudeau filled with messages that show Canadians want to help ensure First Nations children have the services they need to grow up safely at home, get a good education, be healthy, and be proud of who they are. Cross-country information

The cross-country team asks cross-country students who own their own “Bowmore” shirt can you please wear your shirt on Friday? Bowmore doesn’t have enough jerseys for everyone. It doesn’t matter what type of shirt that you wear as long as it says “Bowmore” on it. The team jerseys will be for students who don’t own their own shirt.

Also, there was a letter that went home in the backpacks of participating students which can be downloaded here: Instructions and dates for cross-country (PDF)
