Cross Country Meet Cancellation Today

Below is a note that Principal Sambrook asked School Council to share with parents.

October 1, 2012

Dear Parents/Guardians:

I am sorry to inform you that, unfortunately, our school team was not registered and so will not be participating in the cross country event scheduled on October 2, 2012.

The Toronto District Elementary Schools Athletic Association (TDESAA) annual elementary cross-country meets are annual events that generate significant student participation across our district. Students from grades 1 to 8 participate. Based on the number of schools that have registered their students by the due date, five area qualifier meets were organized in parks across the city (Ashbridges Bay, Centennial, Earl Bales, Thomson). Each park has a set capacity for runners per session and this capacity must be respected to ensure the safety of participants.

In the last few days as final consents have been received from students at registered schools, the sites have reached capacity for the number of runners who can safely participate.

After meeting with the Toronto District Elementary Schools’ Athletic Association (TDSEAA) this afternoon, it is clear for safety reasons and the need to honour the integrity of competitive meets, that the TDSB must respect the TDSEAA constitution for the meets that have already been scheduled. Therefore, only students from schools that have registered will be permitted to participate in the area cross-country meets that have already been scheduled.

However in recognition of the hard work and training of students across the TDSB, central staff is looking at alternative dates and sites for students from elementary schools that did not register, but who would like to participate in a cross-country run. These dates and sites will be shared with students and parents as they are known.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our Superintendent of Education or me. You can also visit www.tdsb.on.ca for additional information.

Sincerely,

Principal Thelma Sambrook
